A native of Lakeview, Texas, Mr. Wells served in the United States Marines during WWII and led one of the most decorated infantry platoons to ever come out of a single engagement. He saw extensive combat on Iwo Jima as the Platoon Leader of 3rd Platoon, Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division. This platoon was made famous for its attack on Mount Suribachi and for raising the first flag on the summit, and has the distinction as the most decorated platoon to fight in a single engagement in the history of the Marine Corps.

Mr. Wells received the Navy Cross for his actions on Iwo Jima, as well as a Purple Heart for wounds received during the battle. He continued to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve, retiring as a major in 1959. John Keith Wells published his memoir of the Battle of Iwo Jima, "Give Me 50 Marines Not Afraid to Die," in 1995.
