Herbert Wegworth, a native of Wisconsin, served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Despite his family’s German roots and his father’s activity with the American Bund movement, Wegworth resisted his mother’s objections and volunteered to serve in the military. He enlisted on Aug. 12, 1942 and served throughout North Africa and Europe before being discharged in 1945.
