Don Smith enlisted into the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and became a military police officer and was stationed in Limestone, Maine, at Loring AFB, Bossier AFB, and then Barksdale AFB. He left the Air Force in 1955 and then joined the U.S. Army National Guard from 1957 to 1960. In 1986, he became a nurse recruiter in the Army Reserves Recruiting Battalion assigned to Oklahoma City, Dallas & El Paso. He left the Army Reserves in 1992 and continued serving his community, working as a police officer.
