Ben Russell was born in Paron, Arkansas and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 18, 1940. He was stationed aboard the USS Phoenix in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked by Japanese forces. Mr. Russell survived that attack and went on to serve aboard the Phoenix for the duration of the war and took part in numerous engagements throughout the Pacific.
