Commander Harold Risener, a resident of San Antonio, entered the U.S. Navy in 1942. He took part in the battle of Leyte Gulf and Okinawa and by the end of the war was the captain of his own ship despite being in his early 20s. He was recalled to active duty from 1950 through 1952 in the Korean War and retired from the reserves in 1968.
