Joe Nemeth, one of 16 children of an Arkansas coal miner, served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was first a gunner aboard the USS St. Louis, a light attack cruiser which earned 11 battle stars, and later he was assigned aboard the iconic USS Missouri. He watched the Japanese surrender signing ceremony from high above on the rigging of the famed battleship. He now resides in Waco, Texas.
