Melvin Meaux was born and reared in Louisiana in a large family. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. He went on to serve as a hospital corpsman at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA and later aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock. He now resides in Temple, Texas.
