Oral History: McCoy, Tim

Branch: Navy
Conflict: WWII

Tim McCoy, a US Navy veteran, served aboard two submarines in the Pacific during WWII. His first sub, the USS Trout, made a daring rescue of 20 tons of gold bars and silver pesos from the Philippine currency reserve to Pearl Harbor.

The Trout was later sunk with all hands shortly after Mr. McCoy had transferred to the USS Grenadier, another submarine.

The Grenadier was later attacked and captured by the Japanese Navy during WWII. Mr. McCoy and his crew mates were held as prisoners of war for the duration and were subjected to torture at the hands of their captors.

They were finally freed upon Japan's surrender.
