Harvey Gann joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. He served with the 15th Air Force 47th Wing, 449th Bomb Group. On January 20, 1944, he was the top turret gunner on a B-24 when shot down over Italy. The only survivor, Mr. Gann, was captured by the Germans and became a Prisoner of War. He made three escape attempts and was recaptured each time until his fourth attempt, which was successful in May 1945. After leaving the military, he spent thirty-eight years with the Austin Police Department in Narcotics. He wrote a book about his experiences called "Escape I Must."
