Joe Higham, a native of Johnstown, PA, served in the Navy during WWII as an electrician aboard a submarine hunter.
Joe Higham, a native of Johnstown, PA, served in the Navy during WWII as an electrician aboard a submarine hunter. His ship took part in the Normandy invasion and was present during the rescue of survivors from the sinking of the SS Leopoldville on December 24, 1944. Over 700 men died in the sinking of that ship and Higham personally pulled 14 men out of the water, both alive and deceased. Years later Higham came to Texas as a regional director for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
