D.S. Freeman was born to a poor black sharecropper family in rural Arkansas in 1921. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and ended up serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He retired from the service in 1972 after working his way up the ranks to 1stSgt. During this time Mr. Freeman personally experienced the racial integration of the U.S. military in 1947.
