AUSTIN, Texas— Today, Texas Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for residents at the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple. The home opened in 2000 and has 160 beds, of which 32 are designated to memory care. Eligible Veterans with a 70% or higher service-connected disability may live at the home for free.
The Texas State Veterans Home in Temple is named after William R. (Bill) Courtney who served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He rose from the rank of Private (Pvt) to First Lieutenant (1LT) in the 10th Mountain Infantry Division stationed in Italy.
1LT Courtney’s dedication to civic affairs greatly contributed to Temple’s growth and prosperity throughout the years. He was a member of a pioneer Central Texas Family and he wholeheartedly supported the community’s goals and objectives. As a well-known and very highly respected attorney and a tireless civic worker with outstanding leadership abilities, First Lieutenant Courtney’s personal, professional and civic life was built on a foundation of integrity and service.
Our Texas State Veterans Homes (TSVH) are Texas-owned and regulated by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VLB has an on-site representative in each home to ensure our distinguished long-term residents get the best possible care.
