Project Description
The sediment dredged from the Mansfield Channel is a valuable resource and the Willacy County Navigation District and the GLO intend to beneficially use this material to restore/create sensitive rookery island habitats located within the adjacent Laguna Madre area. Historically, the dredged sediment is placed in offshore placement areas; however, the formation of protected critical seagrass habitats directly adjacent to these placement areas poses challenges for continued use. The restoration and creation of rookery island habitats, which offer safe nesting areas for birds, and the protection of critical seagrass habitats, ensuring their health and sustainability. Additionally, the project helps protect, restore, and enhance coastal natural resources, potentially reducing losses to public resources and infrastructure by providing more shelter from wind waves within the bay. Importantly, the project also addresses the needs of critical bird species that lose habitat every year due to rising sea levels and land subsidence. By creating and restoring rookery islands, the project provides essential habitats for these birds, supporting their populations and contributing to biodiversity within the pristine waters of the Laguna Madre for all to enjoy.
