Gulf Reef Rehabilitation

Project Description

The Friends of The Rio Grande Valley Reef (“FRGVR” or “Grantee”) will use Cycle 27 Coastal Management Program (CMP) Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) funds to carry out a large scale, priority restoration artificial reef project at a reef site where Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) holds the permit (the “Project”). This Project will deploy approximately 9,250 tons of contaminant-tested and inspected recycled concrete to add substantially to the large, low-relief nursery reef off the coast of South Padre Island in either the RGV Reef site or the Queen Isabella Reef site. Concrete railroad ties donated by the BNSF Railway and broken or off-spec concrete from the local economy will be accumulated on FRGVR donated site in the Port of Brownsville prior to deployment.
